Behavior & Husbandry

Black Cap Basslets are generally peaceful fish that spend much of their time hovering near caves and rockwork. They appreciate aquariums with plenty of hiding places and shaded areas where they can retreat when startled.

Once acclimated, they become more confident and visible, often hovering upside down beneath ledges or near caves in typical basslet fashion.

They do best in stable reef systems with peaceful tankmates and moderate flow.

Feeding & Diet

Carnivorous and easy to feed once acclimated.

What We Feed at Lush Corals:

  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Enriched brine shrimp
  • High-quality pellets

In Your Aquarium:

  • Frozen foods
  • Pellets
  • Small meaty foods

A varied diet helps maintain coloration and long-term health.

Compatibility Notes

Compatible with:

  • Clownfish
  • Gobies
  • Wrasses
  • Tangs
  • Most peaceful reef fish

May become territorial toward similar basslets or very similarly shaped fish in smaller aquariums.

Excellent choice for reef aquariums looking for vibrant coloration without excessive aggression.

Lush Corals Quarantine & Conditioning Process

This fish has completed our full quarantine and conditioning protocol (minimum 2 weeks) prior to being made available.

During this process, each fish is:

  • Carefully observed and stabilized
  • Proactively treated and monitored

  • Verified to be actively eating and thriving

This extended process significantly reduces stress and increases long-term success, ensuring you receive a fish that is healthy, stable, and truly ready for your reef.

We don’t rush fish to market—every quarantined fish we offer has been given the time it needs to succeed in your aquarium.
