Mimic Half Black Tang
Mimic Half Black Tang
Also known as the Half Black Mimic Tang or Mimic Surgeonfish, this unique tang is famous for its ability to mimic dwarf angelfish coloration during its juvenile stage. Featuring a striking contrast of bright yellow and dark coloration, the Half Black Mimic Tang is both beautiful and highly functional, serving as an excellent algae grazer in reef aquariums.
🟢 Quarantined (Minimum 2 Weeks) – Fully Conditioned & Eating
Quick Facts
- Care Level: Moderate
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive
- Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe
- Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons
- Size: Ranging from approximately 5–10 inches at adult size
Behavior & Husbandry
Half Black Mimic Tangs are active swimmers that require ample open swimming space along with mature rockwork for grazing and security. As juveniles, they display coloration that mimics certain dwarf angelfish species, helping them avoid predation in the wild. As they mature, their coloration gradually transitions into a more subdued adult pattern.
Like most tangs, they spend much of their day grazing algae and biofilm from rockwork and aquarium surfaces. They thrive in stable reef systems with strong water movement and excellent water quality.
While generally less aggressive than some tang species, they may become territorial toward other tangs or similarly shaped algae grazers, particularly in smaller aquariums.
